During college, bonding with roommates was important. Being
on our own for the first time in a real apartment was excitement in itself. But
the highlight occurred when we returned home with fresh gossip about our budding
young romances. These relationships exuded togetherness forever.
Now we live in different areas of the country—Ohio,
Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Oregon. Since our graduation an occasional
Christmas card or “like” on Facebook may be our only contact. Several months
ago, I had a pleasant reunion with one of my college roommates that reminded me
of her passion.
My friend began taking voice lessons at a very young age—her
dream was to be a singer. In college I listened to her practice every evening.
Besides being a gifted student she had a pleasant folk-singer voice. During her
junior year of college she had the opportunity to pursue her dream when a good
friend moved to Nashville.
We said, “You are a good singer, but singers are a dime a
dozen. You should finish college.” She had a dream and was not easily
discouraged. After moving to Nashville she spent several years working at jobs as
a secretary, tour guide and waitress while she took voice lessons and sang
every chance she could. She finally got her big break and thus began her
professional singing career.
As happens with many stars, what appears to be an overnight
success, happened after years of hard work. Once she was discovered she was on
her way to stardom—winning two Grammy Awards, Female Country Vocalist of the
Year, having a gold album and becoming established as a country music star.
When I was speaking and travelling a lot she and I would be
in the same cities at the same time. I would go to her concert and then we’d
spend time catching up. But then, at other times for long periods, life has
gotten in the way and we have not connected. This happened again after our
meeting several months ago.
Today’s gift was to put my chores aside and reach out to
make a connection with my college roommate, Kathy Mattea. She was busy so we
scheduled a call for tomorrow. I look forward to hearing about her latest
adventures and planning a college roommate reunion of the five of us. College
roommates are truly BFF.
In Giving,
Robin
