Chips and Salsa Anyone?

Name the actor that these statements describe:
  • About his company he said, “In a way we are really effective recyclers. We take the money and give it back. In thirty years we earned over $400 million, all of which we’ve given to countless charities.”
  • Company’s tagline: Shameless exploitation in the pursuit of common good.
  • Early in his acting career, he was often mistaken for Marlon Brando. He claims to have signed around 500 autographs reading, "Best wishes, Marlon Brando."
  • Chosen by People magazine in 1990 as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the world.
  • Racecar driver and drove in all of the movies he was in.
  • “What could be better than to hold out your hand to people who are less fortunate than you are?”
  • Married to actress, Joanne Woodward for 50 years until his death in 2008.
  • “I am an extreme believer in luck and the extraordinary role that plays in our lives. Good luck, bad luck or medium luck.”

Movies he starred in:
  • Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
  • The Sting
  • Road to Perdition
  • Cars
  • Message in a Bottle
  • The Color of Money
  • Cool Hand Luke

  • “One in three customers buys my products because all the profits go to good causes and the rest buy the stuff because it is good.”
  • “We are such spendthrifts with our lives. The trick of living is to slip on and off the planet with the least fuss you can muster. I'm not running for sainthood. I just happen to think that in life we need to be a little like the farmer, who puts back into the soil what he takes out.”
  • “You can only put away so much stuff in your closet.”

You probably had guessed that these statements are attributed to actor, Paul Newman. In Christmas 1982, he bottled his homemade salad dressing in wine bottles and gave the gift to his neighbors. He said, “The business started as a joke that got out of control.” Imagine his surprise when they knocked on his door wanting more. That is how Newman’s Own began. He didn’t want or need the money so all the profits are given to charities.

Today’s gift was to buy Newman’s Own Pineapple Salsa. There are lots of choices for salsa, but it feels good to buy something that I know the proceeds are given to charity.

In Giving and Eating for Charity,

Robin
