Think about the best boss you have ever had and
write down three words to describe why you think it was great working for them.
Then, tomorrow morning call and tell that person that you thought about them
and tell them the words you used to describe their leadership.
This what was asked of the audience by Kevin
Sheridan, an author who spoke to a group of human resource managers at a
luncheon honoring companies for being the best place to work in Southern
Nevada. He repeated a quote that we’ve heard many times that employees don’t
leave companies, they leave bad bosses.
I was in attendance and was invited to sit with
some friends from the One Nevada Credit Union. It was exciting because they
were one of the nominees for the 2013 Best Places to Work. I worked with their
associate vice presidents and managers several years ago to make leadership
fun.
The emcee described the criteria to be nominated
to receive the award. The audience was kept in suspense about the identity of
the winners as the they were named for the small, medium and large companies. He
listed a multitude of reasons the companies were nominated. It was very
impressive how creative these companies could be.
Then they announced the winner in the small
company category. One Nevada Credit Union was the first place winner! I was
able to celebrate their achievement with them. They are an amazing organization
that develops and cares about their people. The employees recognize that it is
a fantastic place to work.
The event was held at Three Square, a local food
bank. They are in the top 15% of the largest in the country for amount of food
that is dispensed. Local businesses support the food bank financially and by
providing their employees who volunteer for tasks preparing and distributing
the food.
Today’s gift was to donate canned food to Three
Square as a thank you for all that they do to help people in need. It is hugely
encouraging to see the local business community supporting the food bank. The food
bank and the credit union are both a testament to excellent leaders, which is
why employees list them as their favorite boss.
In Giving,
Robin
