All
of them have at least one area of the state that offers a free energy evaluation
through the local utility company. These companies have made a commitment to
save energy. And it even goes further than just an evaluation. Many of the
utilities offer financial assistance through rebates and loans to provide
energy efficiency improvements to help consumers save energy and money. The
loans are structured so that the energy savings provide rebates or pay back the
loan.
The
evaluations typically are about one hour and include a consultation involving a
visual inspection of the conditioned space, attic, crawl space, exterior of the
home, and appliances, as well as a series of diagnostic tests. After the
evaluation, the energy advisor provides a list of recommended energy efficiency
improvements.
After reviewing the list of recommended improvements, there is no
obligation to buy or do anything. However, homeowners may choose whether
or not to make the improvements needed. If they decide to make the improvement,
the energy advisor will often help them find a contractor and determine if they
qualify for financial assistance. It is a win/win situation. The utility
wins because they are helping save energy. The homeowner wins because they are
saving money.
Today’s
gift was to contact my mother’s utility company to schedule an energy
assessment of her house. The recommendations and improvements will keep her
warmer this winter and cooler next summer. Check with your local utility to
determine if they offer a free energy evaluation.
